Green hydrogen and ammonia production
Hydrogen plant investment project in Naantali. Production of synthetic fuel and chemicals for the needs of the current market and to create the possibility for new markets. Primary focus on green ammonia, which can be used as a raw material for fertilizers and in the future, potentially for maritime fuels.
VIREON
Development of H2 refuelling stations
Vireon is a leading hydrogen refueler in the Nordics for heavy-duty trucks. Vireon has offices in Norway, Sweden, Danmark and Finland, and Norwegian Hydrogen AS as its subsidiary. Vireon is aiming to build Hydrogen Refuelling Station in Turku region. The first refuelling station will be opened in Jyväskylä during summer 2025

Liquid Wind e-Methanol plant
Liquid Wind has signed a memorandum of understanding with a local heat plant on CO2 utilization for an e-Fuel facility in Turku Region!
Once operational, the eFuel facility will produce 100,000 tons/a eMethanol made from green hydrogen and biogenic CO2 (160,000 tons/a). Final investment decision (FID) is planned for 2026, and the facility will be operational in 2029.
Green North Energy – green ammonia plant
Green North Energy invests in a 280 MW green hydrogen and ammonia plant.
The project has completed environmental impact assessment and secured a 17 ha land plot in Naantali harbor area, next to Neste oil terminal.
The plant aims to produce green ammonia in 2029!

Maritime industry is in desperate need for carbon neutral solutions until 2050. Turku is known for its climate-ambitious and extensive value chain of maritime industry actors (1000+ companies) and maritime transportation in the area looking for renewable solutions and accelerating the change in society.
The TEN-T transport network – fastest and most robust access to Europe
Companies in the region have excellent export opportunities to Europe and the world. The area has two of Finland’s five export ports belonging to the European TEN-T core network. The ports also serve as heavy traffic hubs and as the leaders of supporting carbon neutral transportation and electrification.

A long academic history and four local universities – 45 000 students and plenty of workforce
Turku has a long academic history of chemistry technology and natural sciences research. The chemical know-how and capable workforce makes it extremely attractive to develop hydrogen based solutions in our area. All four local universities develop new technology for hydrogen economy: University of Turku, Åbo Akademi University, Turku University of Applied Sciences and Novia University of Applied Sciences.
Infrastructure upgrades improves Turku region’s position in the H2 economy
Fingrid Oyj is investing over 4 billion more into the national main grid (picture). The investments are is strengthening Turku region’s electricity capacity by building a new 400 kV substation next to new industrial sites. Up to 700 MW of new capacity coming in next years.
Gasgrid Oy is developing the national hydrogen backbone pipeline. This enables considerably larger potential for e-fuel, e-chemical and e-materials production in Turku region. Environmental assessment starts in spring 2025.

Turku H2 Cluster – value for the area
Green hydrogen and ammonia project in Naantali
Green North Energy is investing to green hydrogen plant which will be located next to Port of Naantali.
The investment is altogether ~M€600 with a 280 MW electrolyzer. The project’s primary focus is on green ammonia, which can be used as a raw material for fertilizers and in the future, potentially for maritime fuels.
