The Turku H2 cluster already consists of more than 40 companies, universities and authority institutes as members. The organizations meet every other month to discuss and develope hydrogen economy in the region.
Significant maritime industry – looking for solutions to decarbonize the sector
Maritime industry is in desperate need for carbon neutral solutions until 2050. Turku is known for its climate-ambitious and extensive value chain of maritime industry actors and maritime transportation in the area looking for renewable solutions and accelerating the change in society.
The TEN-T transport network – fastest and most robust access to Europe
Companies in the region have excellent export opportunities to Europe and the world. The area has two of Finland’s five export ports belonging to the European TEN-T core network. The ports also serve as heavy traffic hubs and as the leaders of supporting carbon neutral transportation and electrification.
Ambitious climate goals of City of Turku – Climate Neutral in 2029
City of Turku is participating in global cooperation to mitigate climate change. The goal is to become a carbon-neutral city already by 2029 and, thereafter climate-positive. Turku’s ambitious climate goals accelerate the adoption of new technologies and will need to involve hydrogen based solutions and development of the hydrogen economy.

A long academic history and four local universities – 45 000 students and plenty of workforce
Turku has a long academic history of chemistry technology and natural sciences research. The chemical know-how and capable workforce makes it extremely attractive to develop hydrogen based solutions in our area. All four local universities develop new technology for hydrogen economy: University of Turku, Åbo Akademi University, Turku University of Applied Sciences and Novia University of Applied Sciences.
Infrastructure upgrades improves Turku region’s position in the H2 economy
Fingrid Oy is investing over 4 billion more into the national main grid (picture). The investments are is strengthening Turku region’s electricity capacity by building a new 400 kV substation next to new industrial sites.
Gasgrid Oy is developing the national hydrogen backbone pipeline. This enables considerably larger potential for e-fuel, e-chemical and e-materials production in Turku region. Pipeline routing is ongoing at the moment.

Turku H2 Cluster – value for the area
Green hydrogen and ammonia project in Naantali
Green North Energy is investing to green hydrogen plant which will be located next to Port of Naantali.
The investment is altogether ~M€600 with a 280 MW electrolyzer. The project’s primary focus is on green ammonia, which can be used as a raw material for fertilizers and in the future, potentially for maritime fuels.

In the Turku area, you’ll find numerous excellent locations and industrial sites for hydrogen business. The region has two modern cargo ports and a railway network that adds logistical value to your operations.
The sites are all located within 20 minutes from Ports and the city centre of Turku, making sure the customers, families and free time activities are not far away from your business.
Education, research and co-operation
In the Turku area, there are four universities and higher education institutions, all of which conduct research and development related to hydrogen and its business opportunities. Currently, there are several ongoing research projects on this topic at all of these universities and institutions. A hydrogen piloting facility is also in planning.
